The Lady Senators of Walters State were crowned the 2018 TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII Softball Tournament Champions Wednesday afternoon in the tournament held at Chattanooga State. The Lady Senators entered the tournament as the #2 seed, and rattled off four straight wins to secure the championship. The title was an automatic bid to the NJCAA Softball World Series in St. George, Utah, where they will be the #13 seed and face Butler in the opening round on May 16.
Walters started the weekend with a 3-1 win over Columbia State where both Paige Calloway and Emma Seagrave hit home runs, and Haley Cannon provided an RBI single. In their next game, they would defeat Volunteer State by an identical 3-1 score to make it to the winners' bracket final. The Lady Senators would score three tmes in the last two innings for the win. Cannon would hit a two-run home run in the sixth while Kara Beth Mahan provided and RBI single in the seventh to add an insurance run.
Their final two games would be against Cleveland State. They would win on Tuesday night by a 7-4 margin. Calloway would have three hits and five RBIs in the contest which included a three run blast in the 5th inning with Walters leading 3-2. After Cleveland State won in the loser's bracket final, the Lady Senators would defeat them a second time 5-1 for the championship. A four run second inning would secure the win. Hattie Campbell and Casey Gilbert each had three hits in the win, and Chelsey Pridgeon had two hits. Five different Lady Senators had an RBI, and five different ladies scored a run.
Gilbert earned the Most Valuable Player nod for the week. She pitched every inning, 28 in total. She surrendered 17 hits and the seven runs, which only two were earned. She had 16 strikeouts wiht only two walks.
