CLEVELAND'S SERGEANT, WALTER'S TYLER SWEEP NATIONAL HONORS
The NJCAA announced their first national player and pitcher of the earlier this week. Cleveland's Nolan Sergeant and Walter's Tim Tyler swept those accolades for NJCAA Division I Baseball. Sergeant was named as the national player of the week while Tyler was named pitcher of the week. This based on their performances from the beginning of the season.
Sergeant's, a sophomore outfielder, stretch was highlighted by production at the plate, as he posted a .474 batting average with 18 hits through the first three weeks of the season while consistently delivering extra-base hits and run production for the Cougars.
The Chattanooga native delivered one of the most impressive performances of the early season on January 29, when he hit for the cycle against Gordon State College, finishing 5-for-5 with two home runs, a double, a triple, five runs scored, and five RBIs in a 15–9 Cleveland State victory.Sergeant continued his hot streak during Cleveland State's series sweep of Vincennes University, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in the series finale to help power the Cougars' offense.
Tyler, a sophomore left handed pitcher, has made three appearances to open up the season, two starts and a relief outing, and is 3-0. Tyler has thrown eight innings, allowing no runs and just two hits. He has 13 strikeouts and a 14.63 K/9.
After two starts and two wins against USC Salkehatchie, Tyler's best performance came this past weekend against No. 3 Florida SouthWestern. Throwing in relief, Tyler pitched three innings and allowed no runs and a lone hit. Up 7-4 in the final inning but with runners on second and third and one out, Tyler struck out back-to-back batters to end the game and collect the win.
