VOL STATE SUFFERS LOSS IN FIRST GAME OF WORLD SERIES 5-4
The Pioneers of Vol State came up short in their second round matchup with Seminole State (OK) on opening day of the NJCAA Division I Softball World Series. Volunteer mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't finish the comeback as they fell 5-4. The Pioneers went into the tournament as the #12 seed while Seminole was the #5 seed. The loss drops Vol State's overall record to 51-5.
Seminole held a 4-0 lead after four innings, but Volunteer would strike for two runs in the top of the fifth as Alyssa Dixon would triple to drive in Kierstyn Smith with the Pioneers first run, and then score on a Mallie Grizzle sac fly to cut the deficit in half 4-2. Seminole would tack on another run to lead 5-2 going into the seventh inning. Volunteer would load the bases with two outs and Anaya Dawson would double down the right field line to score Grizzle and Savannah White to cut the lead to one with the tying run on third. A strieout would end the threat and the game.
Volunteer had eight hits in the game with eight different hitters getting a hit. Maddie Goad would join Dawson with a double while Smith also had a triple to match Dixon. Kaitlyn Davis (16-6) would take the loss in the circle as she surrendered five earned runs on ten hits to go with one one walk while striking ut six batters.
The Pionees move onto an elimination game on Wednesday at 9am CDT. Their opponent is yet to be determined. It will be decided by games being played today.
