WALTERS PUNCHES THEIR TICKET TO NATIONALS
Walters State use a fast start at the beginning of the game, and then held on for a 58-49 victory to becdome the TCCAA/NJCAA Region VII and Appalchian District Champion. They are automatically and entry into the 2025 NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship in Casper (WY). The tourney is scheduled to start March 25 and end with the championship game on April 1. Walters will learnof their seed and first round opponent on the selection show which is scheduled for Sunday at 6pm on March 16.
In the first half, Walters jumpeed out to a 13-2 lead after the first quarter. In the quarter, Walters was good on 45.5% of their shots compared to 5.6% for Chattanooga. The Lady Tigers would get themselves back in the game as they cut the lead in half in the second quarter to trqail 27-21 at the half. They would increase their shooting percent to 21.2% of their shots as they c0onnected on 7 of 33 at the intermission. Walters would connect on 12 of 27 in the half for 44.4%. Both teams committed 7 turnovers and Chattanooga outrebounded Walters by 22-19 kmargin.
In the third quarter, the teams essentially traded baskets for most of the quarter as Walters was still ahead by 6, 40-34, at the end of the third tewn minutes. Chattanooga would not score a point for the first four minutes of the fourth quarter as Walters too a 45-36 lead. From that point, both teams traded baskets until the game's conclusion. For the game, Walters hit 23 of 52 shots for a 44.2% clip while Chattanooga hit 31% of their shots (18 of 58). Walters would win the rebounding war as they outrebounded Chattanooga by a 39-33 margin.
The Lady Senators were led by tournqament MVP Kyra Perkins who posted a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Terryauna Griffin also scored 17 points with two steals. Regan Starks connected for 11 points and Nyjah Gibbs tallied ten points to reach double figures. Morgan Williams had three steals to lead the team while her and Jahjiya McDonald each had two assists. For the Lady Tigers only had Ja'Ka'Yah Draughn reach double figures with 17 points. Kimora Currie led the team with eight rebounds. Currie and Livia O'Dea each had two assists.
